This project was to raise awareness of Mothers openly breastfeeding in public places, as they have faced much discrimination for doing so. The project stemmed from my wife's anxiety she developed from openly breastfeeding our children. You can read each mother's breastfeeding journey below each photograph.
While exploring my small but complex brain, thinking about ideas for a personal project, the ray of light whose suggestions come to her like a hallucinatory psychedelic drug to a 60s hippie (AKA my wife) suggested doing something on women breastfeeding in public to raise awareness. The idea struck a chord with both of us, particularly her as she was very conscious when she used to breastfeed our first child.
On I went, starting out in my adventures, looking for more information on the subject. After researching I found out that breastfeeding, particularly in the UK is at an all-time low (James Gallagher, 2016 - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-35438049). Another thing I found was that women of ethnicity were more likely NOT to breastfeed in public. I started to post on various groups and forums for volunteers who wouldn’t mind helping me and feeding their child in a public place while I took their photographs. The response was less than I was hoping for, but none the less I had some interested parties and to my surprise I sparked interest from women of ethnicity.
Other things I found while researching…Mothers are not allowed to be discriminated against while breastfeeding. Their access to businesses and services is not allowed to be restricted and you are not allowed to ask them to move on, or to stop breastfeeding, they are protected by the Equality act of 2010.
